Building a New Years Resolution ... some tools & techniques

As we venture into the holiday season ... many of us will be taking some vacation time between Christmas and New Years. This time is often associated with 'resolutions' ... to do things differently next year. I wanted to give you something of substance to consider, that if done ... would go way beyond a gym membership.

It has more to do with being intentional with the skills and experience that you have. My mentor once counselled that:

  • Your career is what you are paid to do.
  • Your calling is what you were made to do.

  What if you could get paid to do, what you were made to do? Crazy? Maybe not. I have spent the last several years considering what a 'Purpose Driven Life' is for me ... and being very intentional about where I go and what I do. I have a north star. A Path. A Direction.

  In his book A Work Of Heart, author Reggie MacNeal writes that ... "The great debilitator for leadership today is not moral failure, it is compass failure". It seems that we are gradually awakening to the notion that the greatest tragedy in life is not death, it is living a life without purpose.

  People who don't know their purpose try to do too much, and that causes stress, fatigue, conflict, burnout ... with a great deal of frustration because I am just not 'fulfilled'. And as the old country & western song laments ... we do tend to look for that in all the wrong places. Let me put it another way ...

  • Purpose driven living leads to a much simpler (focused) lifestyle and a saner schedule.

  My gift to you this season is the following video. It won't take long ... but it could give you all the data you need to begin making informed decisions about 'where do I go, and how do I get there'?  By the way, no one else can answer that question for you (sorry Mom) ... and have it resonate with your heart. Let me save you some time: It is not possible to do everything everyone else wants you to do.

  Regardless of how you may feel about Hawaiian shirts or the speaker ... please give some time and thoughtful consideration to the message in the video that follows. Regardless of the messenger ... I always begin with this premise:

  • It is possible that my body of knowledge is incomplete.
  • It is possible that I could be mistaken, and
  • God chooses to use people who disagree with me in very effective ways for His purposes.

  Have a watch and a listen to Rick Warren's personal experience and consider the message. Here it is:

  I am one guy with one message, but what I can share from my experience having completed the 'Purpose Driven Life' program individually and then corporately (with a group) ... is that I am now getting paid to do what I was made to do.  Hope it helps feed your resolution making this season, and maybe saves you a gym membership?

Bon Journey;
